How to make pet grooming a calm, happy experience
By the team at Barking Beauties Pet Salon and Wellness · Nampa, Idaho · June 2026
If your dog hides when the brush comes out, or your cat turns into a tornado at bath time, you are not alone. Grooming does not have to be stressful. After more than sixteen years grooming dogs and cats here in Nampa, we have learned that a calm experience is mostly about preparation, patience, and the right routine. Here is how to make grooming something your pet can actually enjoy.
Start at home, long before the appointment
The single best thing you can do for your pet is regular brushing between professional grooms. Brushing removes loose hair, spreads natural oils, and stops small tangles from turning into painful mats. For most coats, a few minutes a few times a week is plenty. Keep the sessions short and end on a good note with a treat and praise, so the brush becomes a positive thing rather than a battle.
Touch matters too. Gently handling your pet's paws, ears, and face at home makes the salon far less intimidating. When a dog is used to having their feet touched, nail trims become quick and calm instead of a wrestling match.
Why mats are more than a cosmetic problem
Matting is the issue we see most often, especially in doodles, poodles, and other curly or wooly coats. Mats are not just messy. They pull tight against the skin, trap moisture, and can cause sores and irritation. Once a coat is severely matted, the kindest option is often a shorter cut, because brushing out heavy mats hurts. If your dog mats easily, more frequent visits and daily brushing make a world of difference, and let us keep the longer look you love.
Double coats and the great shed
Breeds like Labs, Great Pyrenees, huskies, and shepherds carry a dense undercoat that blows out a few times a year. Shaving a double coat is usually not the answer, because that coat insulates against both heat and cold. Instead, a deshedding treatment with the right shampoo and a high velocity blow out clears the loose undercoat and dramatically cuts the fur around your house. One of our clients brought in an almost one hundred pound chocolate Lab who was shedding everywhere, and the difference after a proper deshed was night and day.
Helping an anxious pet feel safe
Some pets are simply nervous, and that is okay. The trick is never to rush them. We work at the pet's pace in a quiet space, take breaks when needed, and let fearful animals get comfortable before we begin. If your dog can be nippy or your cat gets overwhelmed, tell your groomer up front. It helps us plan the visit around your pet rather than the clock. A patient groomer who learns your pet's name and reads their body language is worth far more than a fast one.
It works. One pet parent told us her chihuahua, who can be nippy with people he does not know, did not nip once and came home happy. That is the goal every single time.
Do not forget the cats
Cats need grooming too, particularly long-haired cats that mat behind the ears and under the legs. Gentle baths, brush outs, and lion cuts keep them comfortable and cut down on hairballs. Cat grooming takes a calm, experienced hand, and it is something we have done for over a decade.
How to choose a groomer you can trust
Look for a clean, safe facility, groomers who ask about your pet's health and temperament, and a pace that is not rushed. Read recent reviews and notice whether people mention how their pet felt, not just how they looked. A great salon treats your pet like one of their own, communicates clearly, and remembers them by name on the next visit.
The simple takeaway
Brush regularly, handle your pet gently at home, stay ahead of matting, and choose a calm, experienced groomer. Do those things and grooming stops being a chore your pet dreads and becomes a spa day they walk out of proud. If you are in Nampa or anywhere in the Treasure Valley, we would love to be that calm place for your dog or cat.

Our Chihuahua Lucky did so good! The staff is so patient, loving, and kind. I was worried because Lucky can be nippy with people he doesn't know, and he didn't nip once. They're incredible with dogs. Go here, you won't be disappointed. 1,000 stars!
They are very professional, punctual, and upfront about what they need. Their facility is very clean and safe for your pet. I always worry when I leave Olivia with another person, but Dawnell did amazing. She listens, she communicates about your pet, and she knows their names. They're not just a number, she treats them like her own.
